    What an EMI is

An equated monthly installment is a fixed payment that clears a loan completely over its tenure, with early payments weighted toward interest and later ones toward principal. It is the standard structure for personal, home, and vehicle loans in much of the world, and the math is identical to any fixed-rate amortizing loan.

    How to use the result

Compare the EMI against your monthly budget with honest room to spare, and look hard at the interest figure in the breakdown: lengthening the tenure shrinks the EMI but grows that figure substantially. Testing two or three tenures here shows the trade-off in seconds, the same lesson our guide to what to know before any loan teaches.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does most of my early EMI go to interest?

Interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which is largest at the start. As the balance falls, each EMI’s interest share shrinks and its principal share grows, which is also why extra early payments save the most.

    Does the EMI include fees?

No. Processing and other charges sit outside the EMI. Compare loans on APR and total cost, not the installment alone.

    Fixed or floating rate EMI?

This calculator assumes a fixed rate. Floating-rate EMIs move with the market, so stress-test your budget against a higher rate before choosing one.
